What
happens when you can't distinguish between the inmates and the
shrinks? Carry on laughing!
In
a psychiatric ward, a young Black patient, Christopher, awaits
his final interview with the hospital's conceited consultant Robert
and his young psychiatrist protégée, Bruce. Christopher claims
that he is the long lost son of an African dictator, and that
the oranges he sees in the fruit bowl are actually blue!
Joe
Penhall's riveting and funny play astounded the critics when it
was first performed at the National Theatre in 2000, where it
played to sellout houses and won the Olivier Award for Best New
Play, the Evening Standard Best Play of the Year, and the Critics'
Circle Theatre Award for Best New Play.
Two
psychiatrists battle over Christopher's diagnosis and treatment
in a display of witty and verbal fireworks, leading to a totally
unexpected conclusion.
