Casting Policy

Octagon Theatre Bolton
- Casting Policy

Below is a guide to casting at the Octagon. We hope that this page will provide you with all the information you need - if you have any queries please contact casting@octagonbolton.co.uk

The Octagon presents a minimum of eight productions in seasons running from September to July. The Octagon is the only theatre in the country to produce and market an eleven-month season in this way.  David Thacker, the Octagon's Artistic Director, will direct five productions in the 2011/12 season, three will be directed by the Octagon's Associate Director, Elizabeth Newman and one show will be directed by Max Stafford-Clark.  You can find information on all the Octagon's home-produced work here.

Direct submission

• Please send your CV to Vicky Entwistle, Octagon Theatre, Howell Croft South, Bolton, BL1 1SB or email  casting@octagonbolton.co.uk marking the envelope/message ‘Casting Submission’. Please don't send CVs to a show's director.
• If you supply a head shot these will only be returned if you supply a SAE
• We very rarely see people for general auditions. We advise that you indicate which role(s) you think you would be best suited to play.
• Our casting team will make a judgment on your suitability for this season and you will be contacted and notified should we wish to meet with you.  If not, your CV will be kept on file for the duration of the season.

Please note that we receive several thousand submissions each season, and it is not possible to respond individually to these.

Information for agents

• If you are familiar with a play and have clients you believe to be suitable, please get in touch with Vicky Entwistle on the email address above.

Auditions

If you are invited to an interview, please make sure that you have read the play so that the director can have a dialogue with you about it. If you have only been called for an interview at short notice this may not be possible and will of course be taken into account. If the production is a new play, we will endeavour to send you the relevant scenes and, on occasion, the full script.

Be in good time for your audition.  If you have to cancel or are going to be late please let us know.

David and Elizabeth are very likely to want to read with you and to work on a scene of your choice, so they will expect you to have prepared for the interview as if it were a rehearsal.  They will try to make the interview productive and enjoyable for you.

After your interview we will always let you know if you have or have not been successful. We will try to be as clear as possible as to when we hope to make a decision, however don't always assume that if you have not heard for a week that you have not got the part - putting the right cast together is like a complicated jigsaw and can take a long time.

We have an integrated casting policy. We seek to cast actors from all cultural groups and of all ethnicities. We also seek to provide opportunities for actors with disabilities or physical impairments to be cast in any of our productions.

Thank you for your interest in the Octagon and good luck with your submission.
