Paws! We're looking for a lead...

8 Nov 2012

The Octagon Theatre Bolton is looking for dog owners who would like their canine companion to audition for the forthcoming production of John Steinbeck’s Of Mice and Men. Auditions will be taking place on Wednesday 28 and Thursday 29 November at the Octagon Theatre Bolton.

This is a great opportunity for anyone who would like to spend time seeing how a professional theatre production works behind the scenes, and who may want to get their pet into the acting business - who knows, you may have the next Lassie or Pudsey on your hands!

Octagon Artistic Director, and Director of Of Mice and Men, David Thacker, commented: “The dog in Of Mice and Men is much-loved by his owner Candy, both the dog and Candy are in their later years and there is a real bond between the two characters. The dog that we are looking for needs to have a very steady disposition, and may well be an older dog whose years of life experience will count in his or her favour! The dog we are casting is described in the text as ‘A dragfooted sheepdog, gray of muzzle, and with pale, blind old eyes’. The actual breed of the dog is something that we are happy to be flexible on, our main priority is getting the right dog for the role.”

The dog that we are looking for does not need to be of any particular breed and no acting experience is required, the dog will remain on a leash when on stage and will only appear for a short time in Act 1, simply walking on stage with the actor David Fleeshman, who will be playing the dog’s owner Candy. The most important factor is that there is total commitment from the owner for the entire run of the show and that the dog has a calm and friendly disposition, with the capacity to be comfortable in the presence of audiences of up to 350 people. On-stage lighting will be used throughout the show and so the dog will also need to be comfortable with lighting changes that will be taking place.

Applicants must be prepared to commit to every performance during the run of the show, including all matinee and evening shows – a total of 33 separate performances from Thursday 17 January to Saturday 16 February 2013. You must also be available during the weeks commencing 7 and 14 January 2013 for occasional rehearsals, dates to be confirmed. All expenses will be paid.

For an application form please email or call 01204 520661. The deadline for all applications to be received is Monday 26 November 2012.

Of Mice and Men is at the Octagon from Thursday 17 January – Saturday 16 February 2013.Tickets are from £23.50 - £9.50. Book on 01204 520661, or at
