'Forget the weather and the World Cup - the Octagon has a hot-shot winner you simply must see.' MANCHESTER EVENING NEWS ON BLONDE BOMBSHELLS OF 1943
Alan Plater, the renowned TV writer and playwright (from ZCars to Fortunes of War), who created the hit musical Blonde Bombshells of 1943, has teamed up with award-winning multi-instrumentalist Alan Barnes to bring the World Premiere of a new musical to the Octagon.
Looking for Buddy is a musical with an original jazz score, a dark and mysterious atmosphere and a Geordie Philip Marlowe, which takes a wry, witty and surreal look at the new Tyneside.
Meet Phil, an underemployed architect: Ella, a beautiful blonde who isn’t really blonde and Fat Jack who isn’t really fat. All are haunted by the music of Buddy Bolden, a legendary New Orleans trumpet player who never recorded and nobody really knows what he sounded like.
Then Zelda arrives from another galaxy (or perhaps London), carrying the solution to the area’s problems: a regeneration scheme for North Tyneside! She’s delivering the Holy Grail, and knows it. And that is when the story really starts.....
Please note: There may be smoking on stage during this production.
