‘Genuinely funny…a delight’
The Guardian on Tanika Gupta’s adaptation of Hobson’s Choice

East Is East collides with Meet The Fockers in the World Premiere of this witty and exhilarating new romantic comedy with a bite which proves that love may conquer all but your in-laws!

When Anita and Aaron meet at a Christmas party, it’s lust at first sight. They’re the last to think there could be any long-term future in the relationship. At thirty, Anita is, according to her mother Chitra, past her sell by date, whilst Aaron is, according to his mother Letitia, a heartless ladykiller. But despite their own uncertainties, the couple can’t help but actually fall for each other. When Anita eventually gets down on bended knee and proposes, Aaron’s only misgiving is that she beat him to it.

As they plan the wedding day, Anita and Aaron have to face reality and introduce their families to each other. However, Anita’s parents are not so easily persuaded when they first meet their future Jamaican born son-in-law for the first time. Aaron and Anita come face to face with the prejudices and fears of both sets of in-laws who seem to group together in opposition to their union. Will their love survive the test?

Meet The Mukherjees is a romantic comedy with a bite.

Tanika Gupta, described by The Independent as “one of British theatre’s brightest talents” has earned a reputation as one of the country’s most vibrant playwrights. She adapted the 1915 Northern comedy classic Hobson’s Choice to locate it in a modern day Asian family in Salford, and her hit comedy Sugar Mummies (seen at the Octagon) was nominated for a Manchester Evening News Award, 2006. Tanika has been nominated for EMMA Awards and was winner of The John Whiting award for Best New Play for The Waiting Room in 2000.
