The Octagon Theatre, Bolton presents

The Caretaker

By Harold Pinter
Director Mark Babych

'The physical clutter and mental despair; The Caretaker was surely the

inspiration for Galton and Simpson's much more mainsteam but similarly unsettling

Steptoe and Son.' THE STAGE

'There are some plays that you should have watched at least once in your life. The Caretaker is one of them.'

THE INDEPENDENT

Written in 1960, The Caretaker was an immediate hit with critics and audiences; receiving awards and standing ovations.

Two brothers and a tramp fight and manoeuvre in a territorial battle for supremacy; their histories, personalities and unyielding wills become embroiled in a classic power struggle. None of the characters can be trusted to tell you the truth, and the three men appear to delude themselves even as they attempt to manipulate each other.

The action moves from wild hilarity to poignant tragedy whilst fantasy and reality collide with ever increasing dramatic intensity. The conversations are funny, the experiences moving and the subject matter dark. Pinter's handling of complex issues, his powerful use of dialogue and his skill at portraying the depth of what is unsaid, all contribute the The Caretaker's position as a masterpiece and established Pinter as one of the greatest post-war dramatists.
