Following All My Sons, A Streetcar Named Desire, The Price and Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?, Of Mice and Men will be the fifth great American drama directed by Artistic Director David Thacker at the Octagon Theatre.

Steinbeck’s own stage version of this classic novel tells the story of fast-talking farm hand George and his innocent companion, Lennie, who accompanies him in a life of casual labour in 1930’s America. The two friends share a belief and desire for ‘the American Dream’ - a place of their own where they can “live off the fat of the land”.

But George and Lennie must protect each other from the cruelty and injustice that threatens to shatter their dream. Their story of true friendship and loyalty is compelling and deeply moving.

John Steinbeck (1902 – 1968), one of America’s greatest writers, received the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1962. His catalogue of work is extensive, including sixteen novels, six non-fiction books and five collections of short stories - his novel The Grapes of Wrath won the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 1940. Of Mice and Men is one of his greatest works. It has achieved success as a book, a play and a film, having been transferred to the silver screen three times.
